Skin Types Are Not Real

skin types are possibly one of the greatest scams of all time. so much so that the average person believes with all their heart that they have one.

when the creation of the department store, the notion that you could go into one building and have the ultimate shopping expierience was born. this meant having to expertly navigate overwhelming counters of merchandise. it also called for simplified, marketable language for sales associates to pitch to shoppers.

as a brand, it became more important than ever to deliver a product that screamed “buy me!” in as few words as possible. this meant targeting customers with buzz words that made them feel seen. imagine an acne prone teenagers relief stumbling upon a product that reads “for oily skin type” when they didn’t have the slightest clue how to clear their breakout.

skin types are commonly used as selling points for more personal and complex skin care concerns.

skin concerns are what matter. the state of your skin is ever-changing. through hormonal shifts, pregnancy, seasons, location, diet, lifestyle and all the other factors of life, your concerns will vary. when you treat your concerns, you can then learn to provide your skin with what it needs throughout its phases. you will be able to better identify ingredients that treat your concerns rather than grab products from shelves simply because they told you they treat “combo skin”.

for example, a client may be concerned with oiliness but they do not have a moisturizer in their routine. their oily skin is not their skin type, but instead a result of a gap in their home care routine (oil production can be your skins way of communicating dryness). leaning soley on your skin type can keep you from achieving results.
